Not so 'Mr Happy'
With over 20 people sleeping above the restaurant you would think that their exit routes would be clear, the fire alarm would work and the fire extinguishers were in service.
Not in this premises, there was no Fire Risk Assessment either and with a Prohibition Notice being served in May 2017 banning the use of these rooms for accommodation, but, when immigration officers made a visit in December 2017 they found a worker living in one of these rooms.
If there had been a fire this would have spread quickly through the upper floors and upwards in the building because the original rooms upstairs had been sub-divided into small rooms using plasterboard and wooden planks.
York magistrates fined the owner £5000 and ordered him to pay the £1989 prosecution costs of the North Yorkshire Fire and Rescuse Service, plus a £170 statutory surcharge
